In a recent article, researchers revealed that a study was published in the that compared the effectiveness of Nexium to a placebo. In this case, Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) was compared to omeprazole (omeprazole magnesium) in the treatment of acid reflux (GERD), an acid-related condition in the stomach that occurs when stomach acid leaks back into the esophagus (the site of the stomach being affected). While the authors found that Nexium (esomeprazole) was just as effective, they recommended that omeprazole (omeprazole) be used as a part of the treatment of GERD.
“As with any medication, whether it’s a medication, a prescription, or an over-the-counter product, there is a trial period when an individual is taking a medication that can have a significant impact on their ability to heal,” Dr. Peter K. Lechleiter, an endoscopy and gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, explains. “That’s the time of the trial. We were asked to prescribe omeprazole (omeprazole) when they were evaluating our data. If they were comparing that treatment with the treatment of a placebo, we would not have had a trial period. It would have been the difference between the two.”

The study was conducted in the United Kingdom at the Institute for Clinical Studies, University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. The study was a cross-over of the UK National Health Service (NHS) and the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The NICE guideline defines proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) as those agents used to treat reflux disease in adults with acute otitis media or acute otitis externa and that have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and reducing the risk of adverse events such as ototoxicity. In the UK, PPIs are widely used in the treatment of GERD. In the US, they are sold under the trade names NEXIUM or OXOMYCIN (Oral Contrave).
The study involved a total of 12,097 patients, including 2,847 participants from the National Health Service. The primary outcome was the occurrence of GERD at the time of admission to hospital, which represents a reduction in the number of patients who had symptoms of GERD in the initial observation period. There were 5,072 patients with GERD and 1,903 patients without symptoms.
The study demonstrated that PPIs were significantly more effective in reducing symptoms of GERD, compared to no PPIs. Furthermore, the number of patients who received a diagnosis of GERD was lower than among patients without symptoms. The number of patients receiving the diagnosis of GERD at the time of admission to hospital was also lower than among patients without symptoms. In addition, the number of patients receiving the diagnosis of GERD at the time of admission was lower in the patients who were treated with PPIs compared to those who received no PPIs.
In addition to the results from the study, the following patient groups have been suggested as possible patient groups for the review of PPIs:
